The first book in the Madison Square series by Samantha Harris, Somewhere in Between is a sweet, friends to lovers story that was a bit of a roller coaster ride for me.
Part New Adult, part Contemporary Romance, Somewhere in Between chronicles the story of Drew and Alex who meet while in college but choose friendship over giving in to their mutual attraction. Harris cleverly tells their story in alternating, 1st person POV by having Drew narrate their beginnings, while Alex shares where they are in the present. This truly worked, the POVs were distinct, and Harris does a decent job of capturing each character’s personalities and quirks.
And, Drew and Alex are clearly in love, something that is not meant to be a secret to the reader. It was this that made the book a 3 star rather than 4. While I liked Drew and Alex, they both shared an immaturity that had me wanting to bash them over the heads, especially as this created rather contrived circumstances to keep them apart. It was hard to buy, quite frankly. I admit I could understand why they stayed “just friends” for all the years they did, but once feelings came to the surface the mutual respect that had been demonstrated between the two should’ve made this the end and not the beginning of actions that had me rolling my eyes.
There were some scenes that gripped my heart and resulted in a few tears, Harris capturing the moments with true emotion. Drew’s best friend, Sean, was a delight and I’ve already downloaded his book, Choosing Happy, from Kindle Unlimited!
Overall, Somewhere in Between was a quick read, perfect if you’re looking for something easy and sweet to pass the time. Drew is pretty sexy, if not a bit of a knucklehead. I would’ve loved to learn more about Alex’s self-professed quirkiness. 3 stars for Somewhere in Between. Heat level: 3

Samatha “Sam” Harris lives near Baltimore, Maryland with her husband David and daughter Ava. Born in Florida, she migrated north which most people agree was a little backwards. She has been an artist all of her life, a Tattoo Artist for more than ten years, and a storyteller since she was a kid.
Sam has a slightly unhealthy love for Frank Sinatra, classic movies, and Jazz and Blues music, but her first love will always be reading. From Romance, to Thrillers, to Historical Fiction and everything in between, she loves to become a part of the story. As a writer she tells the stories that she would want to read.
