Aly Martinez Doesn’t Disappoint! 5 Stars for The Brightest Sunset, Book 2 of The Darkest Sunrise Duet.

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.

Bullshit.

Words destroyed me.

“I’m sorry. She didn’t make it.”

“Daddy, he can’t breathe!”

“There’s nothing more we can do for your son.”

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.

Lies.

Those syllables and letters became my executioner. I told myself that, if I didn’t acknowledge the pain and the fear, they would have no power over me. But, as the years passed, the hate and the anger left behind began to control me.

Two words—that was all it took to plunge my life into darkness.

“He’s gone.”

In the end, it was four soft, silky words that gave me hope of another sunrise.

“Hi. I’m Charlotte Mills.”

Can I give this all the stars?

I haven’t been so emotionally involved in a book/series in a long time. Book 1, The Darkest Sunrise was a rollercoaster of emotion, perfectly put together by Aly Martinez. This book had me glued to my Kindle, alternately laughing and wiping away tears. And, it wasn’t just sad things that brought the tears (and make no mistake, this book is going to wring you dry). There’s just as much goodness and happiness that made me tear up. There were even moments that had me gasping out loud, covering my mouth in surprise.

I absolutely adored Porter and Charlotte. Porter is a dream come true and quite frankly reminded my of my husband on more than one occasion. Charlotte gains so much strength through this series and learns to love and be happy, even as things keep knocking her down. How easy it was to relate to her as a mother, a woman in love, a daughter, and a friend.

There are no easy answers in life and while The Darkest Sunrise Duet deals with over the top situations, there’s so much in this story that’s real and reflective of the lives we live. Martinez balances the happy times so well with the sad or tough times that I was able to be in the moment with the characters, not dwelling on the serious issues that waited for them.

My favorite read of 2017!

5 stars. Heat level: 3

I received a copy of this book from InkSlingerPR and the author in exchange for honest feedback.

AUTHOR BIO:

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
