In the Caribbean for his best friend’s wedding, ex special-ops officer and security expert Ryan McLean meets a beautiful woman in the hotel bar. Their connection is immediate and intense, and they spend a passionate night together with pleasure as their only goal.
But when Ryan wakes the following morning to discover the beautiful woman has vanished, along with millions worth of jewels from the safe of the Saudi prince staying in the suite next door, he realizes their meeting wasn’t accidental and becomes determined to find her.
A notorious thief known to authorities only as the Dragonfly, Mariana Lora has one final job to complete before she’s free from the oath that bound her to a life of crime, but the sexy-as-hell Marine she spent one explosive tropical night with is hot on her heels at every turn. She has to outwit him to stay out of jail, but fighting their magnetic attraction soon becomes a game neither one of them can resist.
When Mariana’s last job goes dangerously wrong and she needs Ryan’s help to survive, he has to decide if their game of cat and mouse is only a game, or if he can trust this beautiful thief with something no woman has ever stolen: his heart.
It’s possible that I have new wrinkles on my face from the amount of time I spent smiling while reading Wicked Intentions. I can’t remember the last time a book made me smile and laugh so much, yet also had me freaked out by the villain and gasping at the intense chemistry and love scenes-which by the way were sprinkled with their own laugh out loud moments. This book has it all: well-developed plot, characters with depth, and vivid scenes that play out clearly in the reader’s mind. And, Ryan and Mariana may be one of my favorite book couples ever and J.T. Geissinger one of my new favorite authors.
As the blurb above says, Ryan and Mariana meet at a Caribbean resort. There’s instant chemistry and, more importantly, an instant connection. Though they each “make” the other, recognizing the cunning abilities inherent in people who live in the shadows, they’re drawn together. Normally the “insta-love” we so often see feels like a means to an end, but Geissinger left no doubt in my mind that Ryan and Mariana belong together.
After their night of passion and Mariana’s hasty retreat, readers are led on a chase which is both comical and action-packed. Wicked Intentions fulfills both parts of the Romantic Suspense genre perfectly as Mariana works to free herself from a madman. As far as heroines go, Mariana has it all. She’s strong and feisty, yet allows Ryan to draw out her vulnerabilities. She’s smart and sneaky (when necessary) and knows how to save herself. Yet, she has a past that’s left a brick wall around her heart and it’s Ryan that has to knock it down. And, make no mistake, Ryan is the man for the job.
A few months back I fell head over heels in love with Damian Scott, a character on the TV show Strike Back. Ryan McLean is Scott to a “T”. I know Ryan is described as looking like a Hemsworth, but it was Sullivan Stapleton I pictured throughout. Ryan is Georgia born and bred with the good ole’ boy accent to prove it. He’s brilliant and goofy and sexy and dangerous. He uses quotes from Julie Andrews’ movies as security lines in his house. How could anyone not fall in love with the guy?
One thing that separates a 4 star book from a 5 star book for me is the strength of the secondary characters. Though I joined the Wicked Games series on book 3 and was just meeting characters that have been around since book 1, I still felt like part of the family. Ryan’s “posse” was supportive and hilarious to include a rat named Elvis. Vincent Moreno, aka Capo, chilled me to the bone as the head of Cosa Nostra and Mariana’s diabolical boss. Her guardian, Reynard, who saved her as a child, was hilarious as he took on Ryan in a battle of wits that had me crying from laughing so hard. And, it wasn’t enough that Geissinger had me laughing and gasping, but I also cried at the end because she made the HEA something that felt incredibly important to me.
5 stars for Wicked Intentions. Heat level: 3.5
